The Stories we tell...

Sonia's Afghan...

A repair story...
Sonia wondered if her damaged (and much loved) afghan could be repaired. With careful deconstruction, and reconstruction, it was made whole again.  Sonia tells the story of this piece best:
"I did not have the blessing of a relationship with my grandparents as they lived overseas. I looked on longingly at my wonderful friend's beautiful relationship with her grandmother (Nenne - phonetically perhaps, NENN -NAY). It encompassed everything I knew I was missing... you could hear, feel, smell and taste the love and joy that they shared for one another. Nenne made afghans and gifted them generously.  I looked on for years as the recipients were chosen. I never expected to receive one; in my young 20's, I really had no need. But when I did receive one - that love and joy that I heard, felt, smelled and tasted between my friend and her grandmother - was woven into the afghan. The grandparent void that had existed for me seemed to be filled, somehow. That was well over 30 years ago, and to this day,  wrapping myself in that afghan feels like being wrapped in joy and love. It's magical."

A Son's Afghan..

A completion story...
The story of this Afghan is bitter sweet. This piece was started by a caring mother, who had been struggling with her health. She managed to complete blankets for several of her grown children while undergoing treatment, but sadly, passed before finishing one for her son. Crocheting while battling ill-health and ageing can be a challenge. Some stitches had gone astray and stripes and edges were uneven. Nevertheless, each stitch had been created by her loving hands, with thoughts of comfort for the son and grandchildren she would leave behind. Without removing any of the completed work, the project was continued, strategically working additional asymmetry into the stripes, in order to create a cohesive design. The family was overjoyed  to finally be wrapped in Mom's loving handiwork. This was my first completion project. On Facebook, July 18, 2011, I wrote, "Working on a special project ... My heart is full of joy as my hands complete this labour of love started by a total stranger."

K's Bedspread...

A restoration story...
A wedding present to her parents in 1952, this handmade bedspread had a special place at the family cottage for decades. Now falling apart where it had been tucked under the pillows, it needed some attention so that further wear could be avoided. While some areas were too badly damaged to repair, the blanket is back in its place of honour and ready to be enjoyed for another generation or so!

Hiedi's Tablecloth...

A transformation story...
What does one do when a treasured tablecloth does not fit on your table? Some might fold it carefully and place it in a 'keep box' not to be used again. Hiedi took a more practical approach and asked if it could be transformed. The answer, it appears, is yes! We carefully deconstructed and reformed the motifs in order to change the dimensions to fit their more modern dining set. And now, it is used and enjoyed, as handmade items should be!
